True tales of the Meatpacking District and Chelsea
In the past ten years, the Meatpacking District has been reborn as a top tourist destination in NYC thanks to innovative sites like the Highline and the new home of the Whitney Museum. But there's a rich, fascinating history to the area that precedes the recent renaissance. This tour will tell you about the area's early days as a military installation, its role as one of the largest marketplaces in the city during the 19th century, the rise of meat industry that would give the area its current name, and the wild clubs and scenes of the 70s and 80s that inadvertently led to the neighborhood's current prominence. We'll also spend some time on the Highline and explain what makes it so unique among New York's many parks.
Then we'll head just north to the neighborhood of Chelsea and learn about its own singular development -- two companies whose huge footprint in the area do much to define it, and one of New York's most unique religious spaces. Like all of our tours, the emphasis is on the interesting stories, people and events that make New York the unique city that it is. Length: 2.5-3 hours Cost: $35 per person |
